Dartboard height and Oche
For both steel tip and electronic dartboards, from the floor, the height of the bullseye (red dot at the centre of the board) should be 5 foot 8 inches (173 centimetres).
The Oche (place where the player positions themselves to throw) varies by type of dart used (steel tip and soft tip darts).
For steel tip darts, the oche should measure 7 feet 9.25 inches from the front of the dartboard to the toe line. Whereas, the oche for soft tip darts should measure exactly 8 feet.
The oche can be marked out with any simple marker from tape or painting a line. In major tournaments, the oche is displayed with a raised strip of wood 1 .5 inches high to indicate to the players where to throw from.
Always ensure that the dartboard is flat and there is no lean of the 20 at the top of the board.
Electronic dartboards can also be used, the same set up is required and the same rules of the game apply. The only difference between the two boards is what is considered a point or not in relation to the rules.
With steel tip dartboards the PA or referee announces the score, whereas on the electronic board the score is added up electronically before being announced by the PA.
On an electronic dartboard, if the dart falls out after it has hit the board and the board registers it as a score, then the score counts. Compared to a steel tip dartboard, the score only counts if the point or tip sticks in the board (See Parts of a Dart page). If the dart falls out after or on the last dart thrown at the board before the referee has announced the score then the score does not count, only does the score count if the referee announces it.
